Earlier this month (July 2011), I had the opportunity to train with the world’s first commercial astronaut corps, “Astronauts for Hire.” The Suborbital Scientist Training coincided with NASA’s last “Atlantis” shuttle launch which marked the end of one era, and the beginning of another. I joined Astronauts for Hire as an associate member to support commercial space endeavors which I have been involved with since the first “JUSTSAP” conference I helped to organize in 2006 with DBEDT and the UH Hilo Conference Center. I’m not the most highly qualified candidate to become a fully-fledged flight member, but my participation runs more along the lines of supporting the industry itself as a potential economic driver for the State of Hawai‘i. Check out this conference which is coming up in November (The International Lunar Research Park Leader’s Summit): http://lunar.uhhconferencecenter.com/
Currently, I’m the IT Manager at the UH Hilo Conference Center and have been working remotely, organizing events and managing the IT for the Center for the past year and a half, while living abroad in the Netherlands. The arrangement is interesting and I have kept very odd hours to maximize real-time with Hawai‘i; the virtual day-to-day interaction with my co-workers and community in Hawai‘i while physically residing in Europe has given me a very unique perspective of our global economy and international networks as well as an awareness of the technologies that bring us together.
Ulumau was one of the most rewarding and spiritually transforming experiences that I have ever had. I hope to become a more active part and participate in some of the boards, so please let me know how I can contribute.

I am a volunteer mediator and sit on the board of the West Hawaiʻi Mediation Center. I am a member of the North Hawaiʻi Drug Free Coalition and a member of the Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce Kuleana Committee. In 2010, I created the Grand Green Homes Tour in conjunction with the Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce. We raised funds to support the West Hawaiʻi Mediation Center youth programs while helping the community better understand green building products and practices and showcasing some of the island’s green businesses.
In 2011 I was presented with the Pūalu Award for Environmental Awareness from the Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce. The Kohala Take it Off Hawaiʻi Team I led won 1st place for most pounds lost. The West Hawaiʻi Mediation Center display I designed of all recycled materials won 3rd place at the Mauna Lani holiday tree event. In the future I want to expand my work that helps people and places be happier, healthier and in harmony with nature.
