About the Series

The Hawaiʻi Island Leadership Series – Ulumau held its first class in 2003 under the umbrella of the Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce. It was clear after the first few classes (and as was intended by its name sake), The Series needed to be “housed” with an island-wide organization.
Mark McGuffie and Dr. Greg Chun proposed to the Board of Directors of Friends of the Future that the Series was in alignment with their organizations mission to serve Hawaiʻi Island and would welcome consideration for approval to “house” Ulumau as a part of Friends of the Future – “so moved” stated Dr. Earl Bakken – the Board approved this motion unanimously.
Mahalo to Kenneth Brown, Dr. Earl Bakken, Phyllis Fox, John DeFries, Sharon Sakai and Susan Maddox for their belief and commitment in supporting our community.
The Series creates learning/networking opportunities island-wide for existing and promising/future leaders, while instilling Hawaiian values.
